Vertical accessroute

Permanently installed ladders shall be used as a first resort.

On pitches between 8 and 45 degrees, roof step ladders are used, and at more than 45 degrees, roof rung ladders are used.

Roof ladder requirements

The roof step ladder shall be in accordance with Type B as set out in SS-EN 12951 Class 2. The steps on the roof step ladder are 80 mm deep.

The roof rung ladder shall be in accordance with Type A as set out in SS-EN 12951 Class 2.

Class 2 means that they are intended for and withstand being used an anchor for personal fall protection. It is possible to use roof ladder as anchors by using step grapples, i.e., a Y-shaped double connection line with a fall arrester, where you alternately anchor yourself to the sides of the ladder at the rungs. This is acceptable for short ladders, but on longer ladders it is more ergonomic and practical to use a dragline or rail system.

Remember that

The rating of the roof ladder attachments onto the roof shall be based on actual snow loads, as snow and ice can accumulate around it. Further attachments to the roof ladders may be needed, or an installation of a snow fence/snow stopper in connection with the ladder.

Roof ladders can be fitted with a guardrail. In order for the fall protection to be considered acceptable, however, the following must be satisfied: On slopes of less than 30 degrees, roof ladders with guardrails may be long, while on slopes of more than 30 degrees, the maximum length of the roof ladder may be 4 metres. In the latter case, there must be a guardrail at the lower edge, for example, in connection with the landing at the access hatch or the transition to the following roof ladder.
