Guardrails and rails around hatches and weak roof areas
A guardrail refers to an approximately 1 metre high rail with a least one rigid upper tail and one rigid intermediate rail. These shall prevent a person from ending up outside of a safe area and they serve as a support when walking near the guardrail.
This can be especially appropriate when personnel with less experience in heights and in the use of personal fall protection are to perform service and maintenance of roof devices.
Walkways, roof ladders and work platforms can be equipped with guardrails. On the condition that the walkway’s or roof ladder’s unguarded side is not too close to an open edge, the guardrail can serve as an approved fall protection device (collective fall protection) and personal fall protection does not need to be used when walking on the walkway/roof ladder.
Even entire roofs and above all sloping roofs can be equipped with guardrails at the roof edge, which means that being anywhere within the guardrail is allowed without personal fall protection.
Safety rounds
A walkway and roof ladder can be supplemented by a guardrail. The guardrail allows one to walk on the walkway/roof ladder without having to be anchored with personal fall protection equipment.
Rail around roof hatch and skylight
Roof surface areas that cannot withstand the load of a person are encompassed by rails. There must be permanent and clearly posted warnings at the access point. If necessary, a roof plan/drawing shall be present.
