Fallpreventive guardrail

Guardrails and rails around hatches and weak roof areas

A guardrail refers to an approximately 1 metre high rail with a least one rigid upper tail and one rigid intermediate rail. These shall prevent a person from ending up outside of a safe area and they serve as a support when walking near the guardrail.

This can be especially appropriate when personnel with less experience in heights and in the use of personal fall protection are to perform service and maintenance of roof devices.

Walkways, roof ladders and work platforms can be equipped with guardrails. On the condition that the walkway’s or roof ladder’s unguarded side is not too close to an open edge, the guardrail can serve as an approved fall protection device (collective fall protection) and personal fall protection does not need to be used when walking on the walkway/roof ladder.

Even entire roofs and above all sloping roofs can be equipped with guardrails at the roof edge, which means that being anywhere within the guardrail is allowed without personal fall protection.

Guardrail requirements

As of yet, there is no standard for permanent guardrails on roofs. These are currently being formulated. In the meantime, partial requirements from the standard for the protection of machines and the standard for temporary guardrails for construction and structural work shall be used - SS-EN 13378.

A guardrail shall be approximately 1 metre high with a least one rigid upper rail and one rigid intermediate rail. On walkways and roof ladders, the guardrail shall be placed 350 mm out from the centre of the walkway/roof ladder. At a horizontal load, inward and outward, with a load of 0.3 kN, the guardrail must not bend more than 55 mm. The guardrail shall withstand a dynamic test according to SS-EN 516 without loosening.
